The 2110 Centre for Gender Advocacy is in the (exciting!) process of campaigning for a sexual assault crisis centre at Concordia University. In addition to expanding our own resources and building the capacity within the centre to provide services for survivors, we want to call on Concordia itself to step up and take responsibility with us for making the university campus a safer place for all members of the Concordia community.
Sexualized violence is a systemic societal problem, and large institutions like Concordia University are often among the worst offenders when it comes to fostering a culture that condones these attitudes and behaviors. Together, we can hold each other accountable and move towards a more supportive, progressive, and community-focused model of service provision and sexual assault prevention.
How to get involved
As members and volunteers of the 2110 Centre for Gender Advocacy, you can help by simply making your voice heard. Write a letter about the necessity of a sexual assault centre on campus; write about the lack of clear and accessible policy regarding sexual assault; write about the alienating bureaucracy that can be a barrier to access for survivors. How could a sexual assault centre at Concordia go about changing this? If you’re not sure where to start or you don’t feel comfortable sharing your own story, we have form letters prepared that present some basic information and expressions of support; e-mail the campaign coordinator for one of these.
Where to send letters
Letters can be sent to the Office of the Dean, the Concordia Student Union, administrators at the Office of the President and Senior Administration, the Security Department, and any club, faculty association or campus media outlet that you feel should have a vested interest in this campaign. If you are a Concordia student, you may also consider writing to whatever students association you feel represents you and your interests.
Become an organizing member
If you want to get more deeply involved in – or have questions about – the sexual assault centre campaign, you can come to a meeting of the organizing committee. Committee meetings take place every other Thursday at 5:30 pm, at 1500 de Maisonneuve Ouest, suite 404. You can also contact the sexual assault centre campaign coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org for any information you need.
Thank you for your time, your support, and your dedication. This campaign is exciting and important, but it cannot happen without the input from volunteers and members like yourselves.
